Site Manager Leigh Williams, Probus Construction updates us on the latest from the Old Town Hall site:
Great momentum on site these last few weeks as we push ahead with preparations on 6 of the 9 roofs ready for our roofing contractor in the coming weeks.
Stripping back the old coverings has revealed the existing roof structure to be in surprisingly good condition, with only a handful of repairs needed beyond the original scope. We’re also carrying out precautionary woodworm and fungicidal treatments to future‑proof the building for the long term.
Our carpentry contractor has an excellent team on site, pitching new roof elements and repairing the old, while our in‑house bricklaying team tackles decayed masonry at eaves level — removing, rebuilding, and reinstating as needed.
Running in parallel, we’ve begun installing ground‑floor steelwork and building up internal masonry to start framing out the lift area. A lot of moving parts, all progressing well with great collaboration between site and Project team and Architects!
A good moment to take stock, avoid rushing, and make sure every detail is dealt with properly before we move into the more extensive internal phases of the project.
Below are some of the latest images from the Old Town Hall, mainly on the ground floor.
The roof continues to change with repairs.
And finally an image of the clock. This face was installed following the clocktower fire of 1932.
An article in the Grantham Journal, on Saturday 16th October 1937 records:
BOURNE NEWS IN BRIEF The New Clock Face. - The new face to the clock on the Town-hall was fixed on Friday. In the daytime the gold figures on the white face do not show up at all well, and, except when near to the Market-place, it is impossible to read the time, but when the clock is illuminated after dark the figures stand out extremely well. If the gold figures were painted black the same excellent result in the daytime would be possible.
