Our 'Opening-Up' works have continued at the Old Town Hall. They have been successful in bringing to light the 200-year-old building itself, having been hidden behind plasterboard, above ceiling tiles and beneath concrete for so many years.
Can you handle the Truth in the Courtroom?
Upstairs in our building, to the front of the main Courtroom, a waiting area was added in 1975. It made the main Courtroom smaller but provided practicality for those arriving up the front stone steps (the only means of accessing the first floor until 1992). The ceiling here has been removed to expose original brickwork, wooden beams and some of the blue painted ceiling which continues from the main courtroom.
Blazing a Trail in the Fire Engine Room
Downstairs, plasterboard has been removed to uncover the wall in the Fire Engine room, so-called because this is where the horse-drawn fire engine was stored when the service was housed in the building (accommodated here from 1890 to 1946).
Below you can compare the room as it was with plasterboard and ceiling tiles, against the pared back view.
The inside view of our building has changed immensely this week and we're excited to continue discovering how well it is holding up and how much we will have to change and restore.
