And we're off! Maybe you've seen the construction vans, heard the pneumatic drills or noted the activity levels at the Old Town Hall this week?
The 'Opening-Up' works have started in the Old Town Hall building; floors are being dug up, plasterboard is being removed and ceilings are being moved with the aim of discovering the original foundations, beams and walls.
Our expert architectural and archaeological consultants will be reviewing and analysing the uncovered parts of the building to inform the restoration and construction work going forwards.

Our beloved Shambles is the first part of the building to be explored. This is where we hold many of our events, with a cosy atmosphere and licensed bar.
This room has an interesting history with many uses; as an indoor/outdoor market, as stables for the fire service's horses and as offices when the council used the building.
The original floor in this room was regrettably covered in concrete around 30 years ago, a material which is having a detrimental effect on the stone walls and pillars of the room. The dig through the concrete will allow our experts the chance to review the condition of the footings and foundations.

The removal of the false ceiling above gives us a good look at the 200-year-old wooden beams in place.
We're really excited to have this work in progress, the beginning of an inspiring chapter for this small building with a big history.
Not sure of the building layout at that point but I think Bourne Post Office had an extension to their sorting office around there in the early 1960s. I recall having to go there from the North St office to collect letters/cards when, as a student, I was employed on the Christmas post.
Good luck with the project - time consuming for you trustees - thank you for your enthusiasm, it is a rich reward for future generations ❣️
Thank you very much for the interesting update 👍❤️ x
